Used BMW Z3 owner looking to convert to HID?
and I was wondering if any other owners could give me some words of advice with their past HID conversions. I have looked around online and I'm somewhat skeptical to most of the sites offering HID conversion kits. I don't want to put cheap parts on my car. Any good advice would be much appreciated
I'm going to differ with Snowie a little on this one.
I agree that beam control is the key to a successful HID retrofit. Typically installing an HID kit in a US-spec headlight results in far too much upward light leakage and the sort of problems Snowie notes (it's an intentional and mandated, albeit annoying, part of the US design, intended to illuminate overhead signs).
However, if you retrofit HID's to a European-spec headlight, with good beam control (i.e. a sharp cut-off that restricts the upward leakage of light), then they work well. There are plenty of E36 BMW's with Euro lights and HID kits running around that work just fine.
On the Z3 the lights are actually universal, intended for both the US and the rest of the world. If they're properly aimed, I've found that an HID kit works surprisingly well, and will not result in you being flashed from blinding other drivers.
For anything to do with BMW lighting I recommend Umnitza, and they have a very nice retrofit kit, of the sort Snowie recommends:
