How many miles can be accumulated on a 71 Porsche 914?
I am buying a VW bus that has a Porsche 914 engine in it, with 75,000 miles on it. Good or bad?
Excellent.
Not only is that an extremely durable engine that you can easily get 200,000 miles out of, but it is very easily rebuilt.
The VW bus was powered by the 914 engine from 1972 to about 1981, and may have been the best configuration of the van. The air cooled engine is more powerful then the waterboxer, lighter, and much more reliable.
If there are any limitations, it would be the inherent problem of getting good heat out of an air cooled engine.
But if one is careful to maintain the heat ducts, the built in heat is adequate, and there are many modifications one can add, ranging from gas or propane heaters, to water transfer systems.
Since that engine is popular for sand rails and dune buggies, the after market is huge.
Uthockey is correct that it really is a VW engine, but not a normal one that was put into the bug or anything.
It was only used in the high end 411, 412, and van.
It is a lot more powerful and reliably build then the old bug engine.
