Looking to buy used Porsche 911, which year?
I am looking to buy a used 911. Have around $45k to spend and would get anything from mid 1980s to 1998. I know I could probably get a 2005 for around that much but have heard that the 993 was the model to get if buying a used one for around that much. Any thoughts? Any other years or specific models I should look at? Thanks.
It is generally agreed by Porschephiles and collectors that the final three years of the air-cooled cars were the zenith of 911 design. Those would be 1996, 1997, and 1998. I sold my 1996 911 coupe a year and a half ago in show condition, with 40,000 miles on the odometer, for $42,500, so you're right in the ball park.
I gave the purchaser complete documentation of all maintenance. The car had a problem free Car Fax, and looked virtually new. You should not have to accept anything less. The purchaser normally pays for a Pre Purchase Inspection at the Dealership of his or her choice. Don't take the car without have a real Porsche mechanic look it over well.
Coupes hold their value better than cabriolets. If you intend to track the car, get a coupe for the greater torsional rigidity of he chassis and lower weight. An automatic is not the way to go for the track, and will make the car more difficult to sell when you do; it'll also reduce your sale price, even though automatics cost more originally.
The first water-cooled 911s, the 996s produced from 1999 through 2005 (Turbos and 4Ss) are much maligned. They don't deserve it.
