What transmission should Roadster use?
From what I have read, the Tesla Roadster's transmission is not that good. How can Tesla improve their transmission without having any significant impact on the rest of the car? Aslo what makes the transmission so good?
The problem with the Tesla Roadster's transmission is that the electric traction motor is VERY powerful.
The electric motor generates maximum torque starting at 0 RPM, so it invariably wears out the gearshift very fast. That is why for now Tesla delivers the roadster with the 2-speed transmission locked to one speed so it doesn't shift gears.
Tesla plans to retrofit the roadsters they already sold with a redesigned 2-speed transmission that can handle the torque, whenever that becomes available. No word when, though.
