How many times can you recharge the batteries on electric cars before replacing them?
Most rechargeable lithium ion and other rechargeable batteries can only be recharged some many times or for so long before replacing them. Just wondering how cost efficient these cars with rechargeable batteries are. For example, Tesla Motors Inc cars run on a huge lithium-ion battery pack that can be recharged by plugging an adapter cord into a wall socket. The company estimates the Roadster can travel 225 miles on a single 3.5-hour charge and expects similar results from the Model S. While its $60,000 price tag still clearly marks the Model S as a luxury vehicle, the five-seater will cost at least 45 percent less than the Tesla Roadster, which starts at $109,000.

Tesla Motors says they recommend changing the battery pack every 100,000 miles or every 5 years.
I guess that's why mainstream hybrid-car makers like Toyota are taking a far more cautious approach to Lion batteries-- Unlike deep-discharge Lion batteries, the current NiMH batteries in hybrids are designed to keep their state of charge in the 60-80% range to prevent the battery chemistry from degrading (which is why the Prius battery lasts well over 10 years).
